MCGREGOR, Texas (December 3, 2015) — The Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCT) has been named the final Charity Champion of 2015 by TFNB Your Bank for Life because of their advocacy for the lives of homeless animals in McLennan County. The award will be presented December 5th during the University of Texas vs Baylor football game.

The Humane Society of Central Texas—not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States—partners with the City of Waco to operate the shelter. In six of the past nine months, the live exit rate has been 90 percent or greater, which brings HSCT closer to its goal of a no-kill community. It is for this reason that the Target Zero Institute, a national anti-euthanasia organization, selected the city and HSCT to be a program fellow and are assisting with the mission. However, HSCT still needs support from the community.

“With the city shelter being demolished and rebuilt, we need to find homes even quicker during the next four months of construction,” said Don Bland, executive director of HSCT. “If we can get donations for adoption fees, we can move our animals into homes much more quickly.”

Bland nominated the HSCT to be a Charity Champion. When asked why the charity is special, he answered:

“We have moved the City Shelter to No Kill status (live exit rate of 90 percent or greater) five of past seven months this year. Considering that four years ago the live exit rate was 38 percent, tremendous progress has been made.”

“Most of our staff are animal lovers and pet owners, and we are impressed by the huge increase in save rates at the shelter,” said David Littlewood, president of TFNB. “Our hope is that being a Charity Champion gives the HSCT an extra boost, especially during the months the shelter’s renovations are underway as well as in the future.”
